Day 12 - Wine Country

This is our departure day, but we’ll be leaving Hungary by way of a couple of significant wine-producing regions. A driver will pick us up in the morning and drive us to our destinations.

The town of Eger is about 1.5 hours’ drive from Budapest. We'll stop here first for some exploration of the town or a visit to its castle. Entry to the castle costs about $20; wandering around town is free!

The Eger wine region is known for the deep red Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) wine. We'll visit the Bolyki winery for an engaging tour of their modern facility and a wine tasting. They have pizza and snacks, too, which you may want to enjoy with your wines.

The Tokaj wine region is found in the northeastern part of Hungary and the eastern part of Slovakia. We'll be back in the car for just under two hours on our way to the Erzsébet Pince winery for a completely different experience. The region produces many dry and sweet white wines, and the cellars here are from the 17th century!

The trip from Tokaj to Miskolc, where we will catch the train to Košice. The last leg of the journey will take about an hour and a half. We'll arrive about mid-evening, with time to check in and go out for a bite to eat before bed.
