Day 20 - Bratislava Castle & Old Town Tour

Today we'll start by exploring the area in and around Bratislava Castle.

Walking away from St Martin's Cathedral, we'll walk inside the remaining fortification walls of Bratislava. We can take a short passageway through the wall onto a bridge that gives us a route directly across Staromestská, the main road that runs in front of the cathedral. From here looking south, there's a great view of the city walls, the cathedral, and the SNP Bridge and UFO Tower.

Our path will meander a bit through the streets and take us up to the medieval gate where we'll enter the castle grounds. In front of the castle is a large paved area which affords an excellent view of the Danube below, and the city across the river.

Bratislava Castle The most recognizable structure in the Bratislava skyline contains a history museum, and a tower with an excellent view. The museum inside the castle mainly contains historical artifacts from the local area and around Slovakia. There is ancient pottery, textiles and clothing, art, and more, from the main level to the highest point of the tower and even in the basement! It's not the most engaging museum I've been to, but the entry will be free with your Bratislava card, and it's worth having a look inside. After that, you can spend as much or as little time inside as you want.

Baroque Garden When we're finished inside, we’ll go around and behind the castle to visit the gardens. They're pretty, though not grand or extensive. We can have a look before we stop for lunch.

Next: Lunch! We should find a place to have a bite to eat before we meet our tour of Old Bratislava at the Tourist Information office. The tour takes about 75 minutes and will give us an introduction to the most important historical buildings in the centre. Our guide will have interesting stories and inside information to share with us as well.

After the tour you're on your own! Have a look at the extra options on the Bratislava Information page or visit some of the places we went by on our walk. These places are included with your Bratislava Card:

Michael’s Gate Bratislava’s only remaining medieval gate. There is a museum here that you can visit, and you can take in the view from the tower.

Old Town Hall & tower. Slovakia’s oldest city hall, from the 14th century, houses the Museum of City History. There is an excellent view from the top of the tower. Entry is free with the Bratislava card.

Primate’s Palace An 18th century palace built for the archbishop, during the time when Bratislava (Pressburg) belonged to Hungary.
